A great confidence boost yesterday at transplant clinic with an increase in lung function from 53% prior to my last hospital admission up to 75%.My decision recently to focus on increasing my exercise program particularly working harder on the treadmill had paid dividends. Now up to walking @ 3.5kms p/h for 30 minutes covering 1.75kms, 4 times per week. As well as two trips to the gym a week & a few hours of Table Tennis on Wednesdays

It was also great to spend some time with a friend whom has recently been listed on the waiting list to answer her question & fears of the unknown of her future transplant experience.

I wish everyone out there whom maybe either being assessed or currently on a waiting list or just post transplant all the very best & continued good health for the future.Also a Mery Christmas & Happy New Year in 2012.

G'day to all my followers around the world, a sincere apology for the long delay in posting a new updated comment .The positive news is I've made a top recovery following a recent 10 day hospital admission & now back to full health doing my presentations, treadmill walks, gym workouts & playing social table tennis once again. Looking forward to another healthy Christmas, thanks to my donor.

Earlier this year in June thanks to my Sweden mate Anders I was invited to Sweden as a speaker during the 18^th World Transplant Games in Gothenburg. As a result my wife & I were flown over to Sweden via a stopover in Singapore. It was an absolute honour to represent Australia for the 2^nd time in events such as table tennis & bocce'. I also performed a talk @ Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg.

Before returning home we travelled to Paris for three days where we saw the Eiffel Tower & Euro-Disney. A phenomenal 4 weeks in Europe was enjoyed by us both & thankfully stayed well the entire time. It was awesome to see & spend some tme with my mate Anders in Sweden & enjoy his hospitality.

I send my best wishes to all recipients out there & my donor family where ever they maybe....

2011 Update

It's brilliant news to report recently celebrating my 21st heart/lung anniversary & still going well. I've "ramped" up the treadmill walks following rolling my ankle on Valentines day walking into the house with flowers for my wife.I'm now walking for my 30 minutes @ 3kms p/h, which allows me to walk 1.51kms in that space of time!

My wife & I are in the process of packing & moving into our new home that was recently bought.

Also plans are in full swing for our massive trip over to Sweden as I'm being hired as a Keynote Speaker for the World Transplant Games in Gotheburg by the President of the Sweden Games Committee I will be at this stage performing a talk for the Games participants, one for the Public, a Business & a Hospital.I am extremely excited about this wonderful opportunity.

My wife Kaye & I will be flying out with Singapore Airlines with the Australian team & team doctor on June 14th with a stopover in Singapore.Eventually a train from Stockholm to Gotheburg.

Should I get the time between talks I'll attempt to compete in Table Tennis & Bocce'.

1st chest infection in4 years.

Recently I felt I was coming down with a chest infection due to the normal symptoms & rocked up at Emergency @ the Royal Adelaide Hospital where they were waiting for me due to earlier contacting the Transplant sister to inform them of my pending arrival.Within about 3 hours I was in a bed in my usual thoracic ward S2 where I'm familar with the staff which makes life a wee bit easier during an admission.Over the next 10 days my arms recieved a total workout with needles for blood tests & I.V.access.Unfortunately due to my paralyzed left arm, my viens had narrowed & getting blood out of it was like getting blood out of a stone, therefore my right arm copped every possible needle.While in there test results showed I had "Para-Influenza" while also having a fever accompanied with chills & a temperature of 39c!

My wife Kaye was amazed at how quickly my body responded to the I.V. anti-biotics,as my fever subsided & my appetite slowly returned.

I was only just discharged last Wednesday the 10th of November to my & my wifes relief as we missed each other terribly.As can be seen in the attached photo, I don't think my arm could have coped with another day of needles!!!!!!!!!!!

So a big Thank you to my Transplant Doctor Associate Proffessor Mark Holmes & his team for my speedy recovery.As yesterday I performed a 60 minute cf talk presentation, so I'm back into my work once again.

Well What a Milestone occassion!, Not just for myself but for Heart & Double Lung transplantation in Australia & around the World.It feels pretty awesome to have reached my 20th transplant anniversary & to be travelling well at the same time! The party was very fitting of the occassion with around 140 guests comprising of Doctors, teachers from schools I've spoken at over the last 20 years friends, family various Allied Health staff & a wonderful representation from the Adelaide Chest Clinic including those from the fron desk! My wife Kaye said a wonderful introduction, then I entered to the soundtrack from "2001 A Space Odyssey".All the speeches went well that included myself, my transplant Dr Professor Mark Holmes & my hero & Inspiration Dr Helen Caldicott.The PowerPoint presentation of my life so far went down a treat , triggering the odd tear & hopefully will get it up on Youtube for all to view at some stage!

There's plenty happening "in the wings" with for starters being invited to be a Keynote speaker at the World Transplant games in Gothenburg Sweden next year.

Historic 20th Transplant Anniversary

Well the excitement is building as it's now only 2 days til Monday March 1st & my 20th anniversary of my Historic 1st Australian 3-Way"Domino" Heart & Double Lung Transplant performed by the amazing transplant Unit at the Alfrec Hospital in Melbourne by my surgeon Mr.Don Esmore, whom I will be eternally grateful to & of course my donor & their family for a difficult decision at an extremely difficult time in their lives.

What an exciting year ahead for 2010, as I reach my 20 year heart & Double Lung transplant anniversary on March 1st! It's a celebration for transplant recipients and; those with Cystic Fibrosis world-wide.The big question is? How will Brad celebrate this milestone "anniversary"?

Some may be wondering & wanting to ask, but how is he doing this far out post transplant? Well I'm happy to report well enough to do a 45 minute walk on treadmill each day!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

Children's Hospital Memories

I spent many a day in Colton ward in the new wing. As I wasn’t well enough to go on outings I spent most of my admission time in the ward; so I eventually came up with things to occupy my time. What is now legendary are my ‘hospital videos.’ I would often take my old video camera & porta pak into hospital with me and carry it around following the nurses. I recorded many early day funny hospital video footage. This was way back in the days when nurses wore hats! On one infamous occasion, to my delight, I managed to get some footage of three nurses doing the ‘Can Can’ in the kitchen! Sometimes I would get a group of us CF's together & we would shoot our own music videos. Each individual would bring along their favourite song on cassette & it would be played as they lip-sinked the song on video! Other times we would just video discussions around the room

Without doubt my favourite footage occurred at about 2am one morning out in the waiting area outside the ward where we shot our own ‘Dirt Dancing’ video. A group of us were motivated by recently watching the movie. We found a music cassette of the movie soundtrack & we all did the moves of dirt dancing with partners on camera. Except me, I was behind the camera. Obviously we were not sleepy that night. Well done guys. Great memories!

These videos will remain very special to me as they contain footage of friends long passed whom lost their battle with Cystic Fibrosis.

Now holds title of Australia's Longest serviving Heart & Double Lung recipioent

It's good to be home again following a wonderful 10 days on the Gold Coast during a winter heatwave.

I learnt to my surprise on returning I'm now Australia's Longest serviving Heart & Double Lung Recipient.Now I have more of a responsibility to look after myself & be around for many more years to come.

Chidren's Hospital memories part 2

Eventually I grew older & bigger out-growing the old Princess Ward & onto the original Colton Ward in the east wing that no longer exists! On first entering this ward as a young boy it felt quite strange and obviously foreign.It was old & grey & looked pre-war.However this new old war was to be my new "hospital hoime"! I

have many memmories & stories from inside this ward of which I will explain in upcoming series.My early "fighting days against Cf took part in this era.

Children's Hospital memories

One of my earliest memmories as a patient at the Adelaide Children's hospital, was a a very young child about the age of 4 or 5. I was in the old "Princess ward I think it was called positioned on the far notth-western corner of the site. I was in a cot with an oxygen mist tent covering the entire cot.The idea of the oxygen tent was to moisten the thick mucus that was slowly engulfing my little lungs.I had woken up & completely drenched from the vapour.No matter how loud I cried, screamed or complained no-one would remove me from this "wet" environment.These were obviously not good days & memmories of growing up with Chronic Cystic Fibrosis.Alas eventually due to my not stop complaining I was finally freed from my wet imprisment, dried & given new dry P.J's So began the early days & beginning of the Legend of the Brad Taylor Story.

Life is going well, with now having a total of 9 work-outs under my belt at my new gym here in Adelaide" Adelaide Exercise Physiology".I can feel & see improvements in the strength in my left leg already. Kidneys So Far So Good

My recent Renal appointment came with the encouraging news I'll be keeping my kidneys for a bt longer yet.The word is they took a bit hit with the renal failure in '05 due to my transplant drugs, so its just a matter of losing them later rather than sooner! The renal Specialist has just increased my dose of E.P.O.injections.Which my wife kindly administers once a week!

I was also relieved to be given the all clear to "begin" traing once again, allowing to regain some badly needed fitness.

I've so got my eye on the 20th transplant anniversary next year on March 1st.

Next stage Stroke Recovery

I'm very excited to report this Thursday I will be attending a new gym in Adelaide that goes by the name Adelaide Exercise Physiology.This new set-up is designed for along with a mainstream gymnasium as well as designed to cater for those whom are recovering from illness or injury. I'm very excited about this opportunity & my next big step in my post stroke recovery

.It all begins with a 30 minute assessment.I'll just take it from there.

Lately I've been doing 50 sit-ups per day & a 30 minute treadmill walk uphill.

I look forward to keeping you all updated as my I get into my workouts.

What a thrill of a lifetime, my wife Kaye & I are to have this Saturday November 8th when we ride in the Christmas Pageant on float No.41 Ye old Tram float This opportunity is thanks to a recent Channel 9 Christmas Pageant Competition, that was entered by thousands.I was almost speechless when recieving the initial phone call from Channel 9 with the great news.

So the plan is to be dropped off early Saturday morning at Pulteney Grammer where it all begins & all in the pageant prepare & get make-up on.We are also invited to join everyone for breakfast in the south parklands. Kaye & I are yet to come down from cloud 9 on hearing about our prize-winning expewrience So here's to another amazing experience since my transplant some 18+ years ago

18th Anniversary celebrations

Hi all,

Well I guess I could not possibly let my 18th transplant anniversary pass without celebrating it in style. Thanks to my new mate "Dennis"owner of the Hellova Jet Boat found down at the Glenelg Mariner pier, along with a boatful of family and friends I went for one Hell of a ride! On Saturday March 1st which signalled the 18 year mark since my transplant, and capped it off by purchasing a Hellova Jet Boat "Polo"top! Recently I and a Photographer from the Local Messenger newspaper met Dennis down at the pier, who kindly took us out on the water for some great shots to go with an article on my anniversary. In summary I was over the moon to reach my 18th transplant anniversary and be passed fit & healthy recently at a doctors appointment. I'm walking half an hour per day on the treadmill and maintaining left leg hamstring exercises allowing me to improve my walking further! Once again many thanks to Dennis & the team at Hellova Jet Boat for the "wicked" Jet Boat experience!

Brad Taylor is now recognized by Melbourne's Alfred Hospital as one of the World's longest surviving Heart & Double Lung transplant recipients.
In 1990 Brad became Australia’s 1st 3-Way 'Domino' Heart & Double Lung Transplant recipient when Melbourne's Alfred Hospital surgeons performed Australia's first 3-Way Domino Transplant procedure on March 1st , making him Australia's 1st live heart donor.
CFSA joins Brad in celebrating yet another transplant anniversary - Congratulations and best wishes on your "18th" birthday!!

Last night the ABC program Stateline featured a story on two gentlemen who rode their push bikes from Mt Kosciuszko to Lake Eyre, with one of them Mr.Richard Drogemuller being a school teacher at Adelaide's Pulteney Grammar school in the city. Richard made the comment that I have inspired him to do the inspirational trek and therefore I was also apart of the filmed story. First I was interviewed at Richard's home along with Richard and Mr. Mark Wellington who also rode his bike all the way. Finally I was filmed performing an inspirational presentation to 150 year's 7's and 8's students at Pulteney Grammar. Today (Saturday) the program will be replayed at 12pm on Channel two.

Great Strides Accomplished

This Morning under pretty warm & clouded skies I set off at 9:20am to begin my Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser walk, from Henley Jetty to Grange Jetty & back. I walked it alone, apart from the thousands of flies that lined the route to escort me along the 3.6 Kilometre journey. My wife Kaye escorted me back over the last 200 metres to take some memorable digital pictures & video footage to record the feat of walking this years event after attending it last year in my wheelchair. A huge thank you to those of you who sponsored me to allow me to raise funds for CF in taking on this challenge. Later in the day I was asked to be photographed with some volunteers from LJ Hooker for the Advertiser & then some photo's were taken with Kaye & I together on the jetty. I currently await a phone call interview to go with the photographs.

A huge Congratulations to Mark Wellington and Richard Drogemuller for successfully completing their amazing bike trek from Mt Kosciuszko to Lake Eyre yesterday & celebrated this incredible feat by sharing a beer on Lake Eyre. What a tremendous effort guys and on behalf of all of us with Cystifibrosis we thank you for your time, effort, guts & determination in order for you to be successful with this challenge. We are all forever grateful to you both. We look forward to possibly a book coming out of this adventure maybe? Annual 65 Roses Cystic Fibrosis Ball

Last nights Cystic Fibrosis 65 Roses Ball was a resounding success. It was attended by nearly 400 people at The Adelaide Convention Centre. Just prior to the main on stage auction, I was interviewed on the stage. The aim was to predominantly hear about my life story, coping & growing up with Cystic Fibrosis. Due to feedback from one CF parent Brad’s comment that “CF parents are the unsung heroes of the CF Community” had her in tears. Prior to the interview the MC, former south Australian & Australian wicket keeper Wayne Phillips, requested to meet me. During this conversation I gave Wayne one of his Taylor Made Inspirations business cards & filled him in on my speaking career. As a result during the on stage interview Wayne brought to the attention of the corporate’s in the audience Brad’s speaking business & mentioned his believeyourdream website. It certainly was a successful fundraising night as the on stage auction items went for approximately $20,000.

So after another great 65 Roses CF Ball: wining, dining & dancing, my wife, Kaye, and I are already planning to attend next year. Hopefully some of you can join us?

Life is good & happy to report so is my health as my wife Kaye & I are looking forward to attending next Saturday’s Annual Cystic Fibrosis “65” Ball which is being held in the Adelaide Convention Centre. The MC for the night is former Australian test cricketer Wayne Phillips The $110 tickets include a delicious 3 course meal & your drinks a live band & the opportunity to support a very worthy cause.

My training is going strongly for the upcoming Great Strides event which is a walk from our Henley jetty to Grange Jetty & return, a distance of some 3.6kms.Everyday I’m managing to walk a kilometre on the treadmill to build up my legs for the big walk.
